An Ancient Brand

Our History

"Our wine is our history, and our history is our honor." A family tradition carried through seven generations since 1907.

Vladimer Danelia — founder of Danelia's Wine

The modern history of Danelia's Wine began in 1907, when Vladimer Danelia (1879–1975), son of Nikoloz Danelia, founded "Danelia & Co." in Batumi. He created a unique label and trademark featuring a bee alongside a cluster of grapes — a symbolic representation of a centuries-old family technology involving the use of honey and honeycomb. The brand quickly gained popularity and began exporting wine to Europe.

The Birth and Recognition of the Brand

Vladimer Danelia founded "Danelia & Co" in Batumi and designed a unique trademark featuring a bee alongside a cluster of grapes — symbolising a centuries-old winemaking technology using honey and honeycomb. The brand quickly gained popularity and began exporting wine to Europe.

1921

Survival Under Soviet Occupation

Following the Soviet occupation of Georgia, the family's vineyards, winery, and signature shops were nationalised and confiscated. Even under the harshest repressions, Vladimer's son, Shalva Danelia (1918–2004), risked his life to preserve the unique family technology and the historic family archive.

1991

Revival and Patenting

Following the restoration of Georgia's independence, Shalva's son, Gela Danelia (b. 1956), officially patented the ancestral winemaking technology and the trademark, fully reviving the production established by his ancestors.

Today

Continuity of Generations

The ancestral lineage remains resilient and strong. Gela Danelia (5th generation) is joined in management by his children (6th generation), economists Shalva (Jr.) and Nino Danelia, who blend ancestral heritage with modern business standards. The seventh generation — Gela (Jr.), Davit, Jano and Guram — represent the future guardians of the Danelia family history.

A Unique, Patented Technology

Wine & honeycomb

The secret of the brand's success lies in the centuries-old Danelia family tradition: treating the wine material with natural honey and honeycomb naturally protects the beverage from defects, endowing it with exceptional stability and an unrepeatable bouquet.

The keepers of the tradition

Ancestral chronicle & genetic code

The Danelia lineage is one of the oldest Megrelian dynasties, with historical traces dating back to the 13th–14th centuries. The family historically resided in the Martvili municipality (the territory of ancient Colchis) and continuously practised viticulture for centuries.

  • Haplogroup G2a (G-P303): the ancient, indigenous genetic lineage of the Caucasus.
  • Haplogroup J2: a direct, strong connection to the ancient Colchian civilisation.
  • Title of Nobility: according to historical documents, the Danelias were hereditary nobles (Aznauri), formally listed among the nobility in the official registry of December 6, 1850.

A family devoted to their homeland

Our ancestral and brand history is inseparable from Georgia's struggle for freedom. Despite Soviet repressions and the complete confiscation of their property, the family preserved their dignity and their unique craft:

  • Iason Surguladze (Junker): in 1921, he heroically fell at the Kojori-Tabakhmela front during the defense of Tbilisi.
  • Longinoz Beselia: a member of the legendary "Oath-Bound Detachment" and a participant in the 1924 anti-Soviet uprising; he emigrated to France and is buried at the Saint-Ouen Cemetery in Paris.
  • Zinaida Danelia: the eldest daughter of the brand's founder, a victim of the 1937 Stalinist repressions, exiled to Kazakhstan.
